The submarine pens … The submarine pens at St Nazaire have to be seen to be believed. Solid concrete metres thick, pocked with craters, squat and solid and still standing – a bit like Jeremy Clarkson, unfortunately.
2:57 “If the … 2:57 “If the Turpitz got among them – beyond the range of the RAF – we would almost certainly lose the war”.
Hold your horses there, Jeremy. We had several aircraft carriers, and dozens of destroyers that could have been deployed ( and we had our own submarines too ).
I’m not saying it would have been easy, but saying we’d almost certainly have lost the war because of the Turpitz is surely an overstatement.
Anyway, great programme. I’m going to St. Nazaire with my dad next year.
Big Thanks for … Big Thanks for posting this documentary….It actually was the inspiration for me going to St.Nazaire last year when I saw it and have been trying to find it ever since to view again….
its not well known … its not well known because holliwood has no intrest in anything non american and the uk film industry is only intrested in the negative side of our country .gangsters and such so yes upseting indeed and frustating there are so many story’s of bravery that could go along way to repair british pride in our country.

Thanks,
Chris
Yeah, the book ( … Yeah, the book (with the black and white photos) is called…The Greatest Raid Of All, written by CE Lucas.

Not quite true – a … Not quite true – a battleship could still wreak havoc in the north atlantic with adequate support. Outdated is not always bad – the Swordfish that torpedoed the Bismark for example flew so slowly that the flak didnt hit them as they were “leading” for a faster target and as a result missed in front of the planes.
We wouldn’t have …
We wouldn’t have lost the war but we would have lost the battle for the sea, the Turpitz out classed anyother ship
