Currently I am in the process of getting my financial life adviser license in Canada. I have been thinking about moving to the states within the next few years and I’m curious about relocating and working within the states as a private small business owner. Would the process be as simple as taking a test to get my US financial adviser license and therefore be able to work within the US? Or is it much more complicated as would be acquiring a work permit as an employee?
You will need to go to the US as an individual immigrant. This is NOT an easy task. Without any sort of job, it’s difficult to get a green card. And it’s not like the US has a shortage of financial advisors (if they did it would help you).
I’d advise you to get your license and work in Canada. Your opportunities are just as good as in the US (our financial services sector is far healthier than that in the US), you’ll see less crime and a better quality of life. Your only drawback MIGHT be colder weather (and that doesn’t even apply if you live in Vancouver and want to move to say….Minneapolis).
