A Terrific Way To Get Over Writers Block

Writer’s block is an inescapable fact of any writer’s life. Some have it so badly that they spend more time staring at their computer screen than they do actually writing! What can you do about this?
The method this writer and many other writers have employed to get their creative juices flowing again is to do creative writing. It’s best to do this without thinking you have to complete anything. Just do it for fun. Everybody loves suspense books. Start one of those. The action and mystery are sure to stimulate your imagination.
Now, instead of sitting there trying to think of a great plot, just choose anything. Glance around the room and pick an object – any object – and start from there. What about that stack of scrapbooking papers stashed on your shelf? Make those central to your plot.
Here’s what you might do for your opening paragraph: ‘It was a day like any other day until the enigmatic note, written on a sheet of handmade paper, was slipped under his door.’ Now write the first thing that pops into your head. Maybe the note was from a secret admirer or maybe it was from a debt collector. It’s your call!
That mysterious note will trigger more fantasies in your mind. Go with them! Say that note was from a woman who wants to arrange an erotic rendezvous. Should you take her up on it or is she luring you into a trap? You can’t resist the temptation, but you’re going to have to take some precautions.
Now, at that suspenseful moment, set aside your thriller and get back to your job. You should already have it open, so you can get back to it without delay. Your imagination is running wild now and anything can happen. That Giro Ski Helmet you were supposed to be writing a technical data sheet about is now a very important part of your life. You need to describe it in detail, because you’ll be needing it when that romantic encounter turns deadly!
You will be surprised at how well this technique works! If you’re writing somebody’s thesis, you’ll find a way to fit the thesis into your plot. Some of the best thrillers ever written were about technical themes like the chemistry of perfume. Try it! It’s fun and is a guaranteed way to get over writer’s block!
