Tips to Make Your Blog a Must-Read

Writing a great blog is difficult if you’re not accustomed to writing for an audience.   Everyone seems to be blogging these days, and no one quite feels complete unless they’re attracting and maintaining a loyal readership.   The best way to win readers is by choosing a compelling subject and writing about it in an interesting way.  By honing your skills and writing often, you too can have a successful blog with a faithful readership.

You should approach blog writing with concentration not unlike the kind that a businessperson has toward his or her business.  Plenty of bloggers approach their blogs as a small business, and they should!  People are making money from blogging, through Internet advertisement.   Businesspersons with the right attitude think about all aspects of the business, from an overall business plan to methods of saving money.  They’ll simultaneously search out a business coupon while at the same time brainstorming a new advertising scheme.  Complacency is not an option.  Even with something as seemingly insignificant as business software coupons, they are focused like a laser.

Operating a blog should demand a similar focus from a writer.   First, determine the subject of your blog.   You should have some overarching theme, regardless of how you choose to implement that particular theme.  To give an example, there are “mommy bloggers” who write about all sorts of family topics, including child rearing, home economizing, working motherhood, child safety products, among other things.  Sometimes they review products, and other times, they’re just telling an amusing anecdote.    The most successful bloggers will notice which posts attract the greatest response, and then tailor content to those subjects.   Maximizing posts on subjects that animate readers is a sure way to build traffic.

You should write in an accessible tone, even if your subject is arcane.   Resist alienating new readers with too much “inside baseball” references or too many inside jokes.  Let that come out in the comment section, instead.  Getting to a point that you have a loyal readership is dependent on fostering a sense of camaraderie, but the entries should not confuse new readers.

Most of all, choose a subject for which you have great passion.  You’re far more likely to come up with compelling content if you have an enthusiasm for the subject at hand.
